Bennett, Fiona (Chickadee)

Attending summer camp as a kid inspired me to apply for Outdoor School as a student at Penn State, and what I learned as a counselor and an LGL has guided my career and my life!

Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2021–2022

Positions Held: Outdoor School, Summer Camp

Current Company/Organization: NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Whitewater Challengers

Today, I work as a regulatory investigator at a state-level environmental agency, and on the weekends, I am a river guide and sports photographer! I constantly use the lessons I learned as a counselor and learning group leader (LGL) to help me educate the public about how important the environment is, and how humans can affect it.

My wood cookie hangs in my cubicle to help remind me of all the fun I had at Outdoor School and environmental education’s impact! Participating in Outdoor School came at a very uncertain time in my life, and the lessons I learned as a counselor and LGL helped me feel more comfortable both using my voice and following my passions. Those lessons have led me to be braver and pursue opportunities I cherish, like becoming a whitewater kayaker and river guide. Every time I work a trip, I think about Xylem and Dandelion teaching us about the impact of positive outdoor experiences. It shapes how I engage with our guests and makes me a better river guide. I miss Outdoor School, all the friends I made, and the songs we sang!
