Henry, Emma (Kestrel)

Shaver’s Creek taught me to embrace the magic and joy of nature at any age, and the children I taught inspired me to remain endlessly curious, playful, and eager to continue learning from the world around me.

Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2017–2023

Positions Held: Leader in Training, Summer Camp, Naturalist

Current Company/Organization: Northwestern University (graduate student), Circle of Blue (independent water newsroom)

I am currently a graduate student at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where I study health, environment, and science reporting. In addition, I am pursuing an internship with Circle of Blue, an independent water newsroom focused on the Great Lakes region. My reporting often focuses on environmental justice, conservation, and environmental policy.

Shaver’s Creek was, in part, a reason why I decided to pursue environmental work full-time. I learned so much from growing up and working there, surrounded every day by curious minds and creative ideas. I wanted to bring that energy to the work I do now, which allows me to write about our world and how humans and nature intersect daily. I truly “never stop discovering” untold and underrepresented stories. The connections I made at Shaver’s have stayed with me for years, and I continue to maintain beautiful friendships around the country!
