My countless hours in the woods at Shaver’s Creek are a big part of the reason why I am a science teacher today!
Years at Shaver’s Creek: 1996–2011
Positions Held: Block/SEED Semester, Summer Camp, Volunteer
Current Company/Organization: The Overlake School
My family visited Shaver’s Creek for longer than I can remember. When I was 10, I decided I wanted to be an ornithologist, so we started volunteering there. Cleaning the raptor cages was exhausting but eventually led to the chance to give presentations with the birds, which is what helped me realize that I love teaching. I attended many summer camps, then was an LIT and later a summer camp counselor. In college, I had the chance to attend block semester which really shaped who I am today as a science teacher. I moved away in 2011 but love every time I get the chance to bring my daughter to Shaver’s Creek to explore it again through her. I don’t think I’d be the person I am today without this place!
