When I got into Penn State, I received a brochure for the ORION backpacking trip. I was hesitant, but in retrospect, that experience altered the course of my college career—and my life. ORION led me to Outdoor School, my home away from home. Countless friends made, campers taught, stories shared, songs sung (or screamed at the top of our lungs). I’m proudly one of the few who can say that they participated in ODS every single semester as an undergrad.
So many people from Shaver’s Creek showed me kindness and patience (Ellen, Doug, Doug, Brian, Matt, Paul, Jut, Jen, Jen, Rod, Will, Joan, Mark, Laurie, Joshua, Eric, and many more). They changed my life for the better and I will always be grateful.
I’m happily married to a wonderful woman and together we are raising a daughter and hoping for more. I teach 5th grade. We play Cosmic Secret or Mystery Animal on alternating weeks. There is a watchful Iron Owl on my windowsill. I take my students to our local Outdoor School every school year. We make wood cookies and pick nature names; and yes, I tell them The Lorax by heart at our campfire.
