Nature is also great fun. To pretend that nature isn’t fun is to miss much of the joy of being alive.
Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2009–2010
Positions Held: Intern, Volunteer
Current Company/Organization: Fairfax County Public Safety Communications
Shaver’s Creek is such a special place and the most fun, rewarding job I’ve had. Among the skills and lessons I learned; public speaking, how to drive very gently with live animals in the Goose, the basics of birding, how to sit still and really listen, the amount of hard work and planning that go into taking care of animals, how to meet people where they’re at, that everything is connected, and to appreciate my maple syrup.
Though I’m no longer working in environmental education, the skills I learned at Shaver’s Creek are ones that will continue to serve me throughout my life. Oh also—I met my wonderful husband, Casey Pittrizzi (Shepherd), while volunteering at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Not many couples can say they met while prepping beef for a Golden Eagle!
