Today, I work part time as a specialist teacher at a primary school—teaching science, extension math, and extension literacy. When not teaching, I write science fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction for ages 8 to adult.
Previously, I ran a heritage interpretation consultancy (InterpTech) and a science outreach program (The Bugmobile). My work at Shaver’s Creek and other nature centers gave me valuable experience in managing people, workloads, and administrative tasks, which has been valuable in running my own businesses. But perhaps the most valuable aspect of my time at Shaver’s Creek was the collective knowledge and enthusiasm of the staff—so much of my skill as a naturalist and observer of nature has come from my colleagues.
