Common Sedges of Pennsylvania: Two-Day Workshop

When: July 17, 2025 – July 18, 2025, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Where: Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, Petersburg, PA
Add to Calendar: iCal | Google

In this two-day workshop, we’ll take an in-depth look at an often overlooked group of plants—the sedges. Using collected and herbarium specimens, we’ll learn the characters needed to identify the following common genera: Eleocharis, Scirpus, Schoenoplectus, Cyperus and Carex as well as emphasize how to tell the genera apart. We’ll also take a look at uncommon sedges that make the Commonwealth their home. Each day, participants will have a chance to apply what they’ve learned through guided walks. If you think all sedges have edges, this workshop may surprise you! Please bring a hand lens. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of Lauren Brown’s Grasses, Sedges and Rushes: An Identification Guide, which can be purchased from Yale University Press

Cost: $80/person (lunch not included)

This workshop is in partnership with the Pennsylvania State University Herbarium (PAC).
