Newberry, Milton (Big Brown Bat)

Shaver’s Creek was the quintessential catalyst for my professional trajectory in wildlife conservation and environmental education. To go beyond making an impression & make an IMPACT on others regarding environmental education.

Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2007–2008

Positions Held: Intern

Current Company/Organization: Penn State – College of Agricultural Sciences administrator – Director of Student Advocacy and Access Programs

I am an administrator in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. I serve as a director and provide support for students, faculty, and staff in my college, including providing career and research mentorship. Shaver’s Creek prepared me for my journey by actually forging its path. After graduating from Penn State with a degree in wildlife ecology, I thought my only career option was to be a state biologist. However, Shaver’s Creek allowed me to engage with natural and human communities and learn the value of the “Awareness to Action” continuum with conservation. I can do all the work with protecting nature, but it is a long and arduous battle if I do not engage people with nature and empower them to see the value in nature and work to conserve it. The impact of Shaver’s Creek led me to acquiring other EE and conservation jobs across the Eastern U.S., earning my master’s and doctorate degrees, and guiding my research agenda. Even today, Shaver’s Creek still makes an impact in my life. It showed me how to care for others. I owe my professional life to Shaver’s Creek. It is invaluable. Thank you, Shaver’s Creek!
