From the fallen leaves of trees, the gift of life the forest receives!
Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2010–2012
Positions Held: Outdoor School, Volunteer
Current Company/Organization: Wilson Home Farms
An environmental educator stopped into one of my college classes to promote volunteering for Outdoor School. Outdoor School sounded like my favorite summer camp I had attended as a kid at the Perkiomen Watershed Conservatory in Montgomery County; it also sounded like a welcome break from classes. Following ODS, I fell in love with Shaver’s Creek and volunteered for many of the events, including the Halloween Hike / Harvest Festival where I got to repeat the line I used in my quote over and over for each group.
The summer between my junior and senior years, I had applied to two internships: Shaver’s Creek and Tait Farm Foods. Choosing between the two was one of the harder decisions in my life. I went with Tait Farm and today run a backyard farming company named Wilson Home Farms. My company installs and maintains home vegetable gardens and fruit orchards organically throughout Centre County.
Shaver’s Creek taught me how accessible and fun learning about how to care for our earth is. It takes a gentle reminder or being shown how to act better for the health of our world, and Shaver’s Creek is there to do so!
