Join us at Shaver’s Creek to celebrate Amphibian Awareness Week with Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC). Participants will gain valuable knowledge of species diversity through a collaborative BioBlitz survey as visitors are guided to observe amphibians and their habitats. Participants are welcome to join for the entire program or drop-in for a quick peek.
What’s a BioBlitz? These are fun, collaborative events where communities come together to help identify and record as many species as possible in a specific area during a specific timeframe. The information collected in a BioBlitz often helps provide valuable data to researchers and scientists working on conservation efforts.
Penn State graduate students Rosella Cuomo (master’s student in ecology), Melissa Marquez (Ph.D. student in ecology), and Jane Venezia (Ph.D. student in ecology and microbiome sciences) will be leading groups in the field, alongside Shaver’s Creek naturalists.
We are offering both a morning and an evening BioBlitz. Visitors are welcome to join both programs, as we may see different species during different times of the day.
This BioBlitz is open to all ages, families, and individuals. Youth participants must be accompanied by an adult participant. Bring a good pair of hiking boots or muck boots and dress appropriately for weather. Rain can encourage amphibians to be more active!
Parking
You may park in the Shaver’s Creek parking lot for this event. Please use caution in construction areas, drive slowly, and follow signage on-site. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we finish up our parking lot renovation.
