Join Shaver’s Creek staff Alexa Sarussi for a free, in-person morning of nature journaling!

This month, join us at Shaver’s Creek to learn about one of humanity’s oldest pigments: ochre. Staff from the Center for Virtual/Material Studies will help us explore this natural, inorganic earth pigment, which we can find right under our feet. We’ll learn about the historical and modern processes for extracting ochre, before working through the steps to create the pigment together.

The Center for Virtual/Material Studies (CVMS) is a university-level research center in the Department of Art History. It supports innovative research into the materiality of historical objects and explores virtual means of conveying that materiality. The CVMS encourages adventurous engagement with cultural materials and nurtures interdisciplinary relationships among the scholars that study them.

All ages, families, and individuals are welcome. We encourage parents to bring children who express genuine interest in nature drawing, but ask that they monitor their behavior. Youth participants must be accompanied by an adult participant.
