Penn State’s Musser Gap Greenway is a place where people can connect with nature, learn about the environment, and find inspiration. For Earth Day, we will be working on our streamside buffer project along Slab Cabin Run. We are looking for volunteers like you to lend a hand!

In this family-friendly volunteer event, we’ll be checking tree tubes and planting trees and shrubs along Slab Cabin Run to increase wildlife habitat, protect fresh water, and reduce erosion. Be prepared to get dirty, walk through tall grass, use tools like hammers and shovels, and plant trees.

We will be holding two work shifts, 1:00–2:30 p.m. and 2:30–4:00 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to register for one or both.

Know before you go:

  • Parking is limited, so please consider carpooling.
  • Volunteers should park at the Musser Gap Trail Parking Area and walk along the Musser Gap Greenway Trail to the Shingletown Road crosswalk. We will be working near the bridge that crosses over Slab Cabin Run. Look for the welcome banner when you cross the road.
  • Families with children of all ages are welcome, however children under 18 need a parent in attendance for the duration of the event.
  • This event is rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.
  • Please wear closed-toed shoes.
  • Bug spray, sunscreen, tools, materials, and gloves will be available.
  • There are no on-site facilities. Please use the restroom prior to arriving and bring at least two full bottles of water.
