Bruce, Sarah (Sparrow)

SCEC will provide you with both roots and wings. SCEC roots you in environmental education so you can fly high and spread your wings to bring experiential learning anywhere you land. And, I’ve never stopped discovering.

Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2013–2017

Positions Held: Outdoor School, Block/SEED Semester

Current Company/Organization: National Park Service

My first experience at Shaver’s Creek was the Orion Orientation program which took incoming first year students on a backpacking experience before the official start of the semester. My time at SCEC grew roots when I became an Outdoor School counselor, then a SEED semester participant (2016), then a learning group leader at ODS.

Through the SEED semester, learning how to do environmental education and interpretation prepared me for my career with the National Park Service.

After graduating from Penn State in fall 2017, I immediately moved to the great state of Alaska as a community volunteer ambassador for the NPS. I then became a seasonal interpreter at Katmai National Park and later Lake Clark National Park. Now, I am the visual information specialist for Katmai and am the main coordinator for Fat Bear Week, a conservation campaign that reaches more than 3 million people from over 100 countries.

My time at SCEC was the foundation for the work that I do now: connecting people to their public land through online and in person interpretation and education.
