Shaver’s Creek ~ the people, the place, and the community, have been a source of joy and inspiration for me since I was a student in 1984 through my current role as a program director for the past 33 years!
Years at Shaver’s Creek: 1984–2026
Positions Held: Outdoor School, Volunteer, Block/SEED Semester, Program Director, Instructor
Current Company/Organization: Shaver’s Creek!
I came to Shaver’s Creek as a student in 1984 and was a block student in 1987. As a student, it was an opportunity for me to learn among like-minded peers, teach programs, and experientially learn in a supportive community. I found my place at Shaver’s Creek and learned life skills that have stayed with me throughout my career.
From 1988–1993, I spent time working in the outdoor education field afar (Vermont, Ohio, Colorado). While each of these places taught me new skills and provided opportunity for growth, I knew that that they were all missing one thing—community.
In 1993, I returned to Shaver’s Creek as program director. My job has entailed many things over the past 33 years. (teambuilding director, instructor, maple sugaring director, to name a few) But the reason I came back, and the reason I stay, is because of the people. Working at Shaver’s Creek has taught me the importance of connection and relationship. It has helped me to learn that I am part of something bigger than myself, and when an organization works together and focuses on the people we serve (internal and external), there is nothing we cannot accomplish!
