Shaver’s Creek taught me to see all the magic in nature—and to always keep discovering and find wonder—whether it’s the first or hundredth time I see a warbler, seal, moss, or aspen.
Years at Shaver’s Creek: 2015–2017
Positions Held: Outdoor School, Block/SEED Semester, Volunteer
Current Company/Organization: State of Utah – Division of Water Quality
I currently work as a water quality technician for Utah’s Division of Water Quality. I take samples and measurements at streams and lakes to monitor harmful algal blooms in recreational waters, water chemistry at various lake depths, biodiversity in streams through electrofishing, stream characteristics like slope, and more. Overall, I spend a lot of time getting to know Utah’s watersheds!
I also worked at Utah’s Hogle Zoo as an educator, at Tracy Aviary in their Bird Show Department, and for various environmental education organizations.
I treasure my time at Shaver’s Creek. I did SEED Semester in 2016, helped with fall/spring events, was an ODS counselor, and volunteered with the raptors. Before Shaver’s Creek, I knew I loved animals. After, I became more connected to and interested in all of nature. Doing nature walks, learning interpretation from great teachers, and just spending time there helped me develop curiosity in the world around me. In my career, I decided to shift towards field science, but I carry that appreciation for all aspects of nature with me everyday. It helps me be a better scientist for sure, but also to find magic everywhere! And I’m always ready to try and share that with others!
