Shaver’s Creek is where I felt at home, from my time as an intern to the times volunteering at Outdoor School and the Children’s Magical Trail.

Years at Shaver’s Creek: 1996–1998

Positions Held: Intern, Outdoor School, Volunteer

Current Company/Organization: Sumter Public Library (Library Systems & Services)

Currently, I work at a public library. This is quite a different place from where I began. Shaver’s Creek allowed me to be myself and play to my strengths. I have used that and wanted to grow wherever I found myself and to also know that I may need to move on. I have worked at residential and day camps, served as a 911 call taker and police dispatcher, joined the Peace Corps and served in Samoa. I was a high school science teacher in the US Territory of American Samoa and was 2015 Teacher of the Year, meeting President Obama. I came back to the US and started using my college degree working in recreation and parks. The library is an opportunity to serve the community and encourage learning. I also love sharing ideas for programming. Shaver’s Creek helped me with my planning skills (summer day camp lessons), my work ethic (giving every job the attention it needed to the best of my ability), my writing skills (writing for the newsletter about the local beavers), learning the importance of teamwork and playing to others strengths (loved team building), and always to notice the beauty that surrounds us.
