Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center has meant so much to me throughout my college career and the year coming out of it. Here is a very short list of what I’ve learned over the last 10 months.

Located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, Shaver’s Creek has been connecting people to people and people to nature since 1976. We provide educational and recreational opportunities for families, schools, corporate groups, and Penn State students. Come hike a trail, see live animals up close, learn about conservation, and enjoy our programs.
Shaver’s Creek is committed to extending Penn State’s Outreach mission of instruction, service, and research. Through quality programs, we teach, model, and provide the knowledge, values, skills, experiences, and dedication that enable individuals and communities to achieve and maintain harmony between human activities and the natural systems that support all living species.

If you think all sedges have edges, this workshop may surprise you! 🌾
We're partnering with the Penn State University Herbarium to offer Common Sedges of Pennsylvania: A Two Day Workshop! In this workshop, we’ll take an in-depth look at an often overlooked group of plants—the sedges.
Using collected and herbarium specimens, we’ll learn the characters needed to identify the following common genera: Eleocharis, Scirpus, Schoenoplectus, Cyperus and Carex as well as emphasize how to tell the genera apart. We’ll also take a look at uncommon sedges that make the Commonwealth their home. Each day, participants will have a chance to apply what they’ve learned through guided walks.
Space is limited, so register today! Head to our website for more details.
